Twillingate is a community made up of two islands joined by a bridge - the North and South Twillingate Islands, located on the northeast coast of Newfoundland.

Visitors flock to Twillingate to explore it's fishing heritage, and discover the mighty icebergs and whales that gather in its waters.

Twillingate is fast becoming a popular tourist destination for people from all corners of the globe.

For the photographer or rock-hound, it is a paradise; and for those just wanting a chance to get away from it all, just relax and enjoy the warmth and friendliness of the people.

North and South Twillingate Islands

Twillingate is known as the "Iceberg Capital Of The World" because of the many icebergs that flow past it's shores in early spring and summer.

At one time, Twillingate was known as "Toulinquet".

It was so named by the the French because it's appearance was so much like that of a group of islands by that name off the coast of France, near Brest. In the early 1700's, Toulinquet soon became Twillingate to the English Settlers who could not speak or read the French language.

The town was incorporated on September 30, 1965 and has a population of approximately 2600. Twillingate became linked to the mainland of Newfoundland by a causeway in 1973 and has a rich history dating back to the early 1700's.

Are Icebergs Salty?

No, icebergs are composed of pure fresh water - sometimes thousands of years old!

There may be some dust embedded in the ice and salt water may be on the surface but it does not penetrate the ice.

Iceberg ice is very safe to eat/drink.

Are Icebergs Unstable?

Quite often icebergs are unstable.

ARE ICEBERGS UNSTABLE?

Because of the unusual shape, form and rate of melting these factors add up to an unstable iceberg. The tabular icebergs are one of the most stable, whereas dome shaped icebergs are able to topple over within seconds.

While most of an iceberg is underwater, as it melts and the weight shifts it is possible for it to flip over!

Bridgework Coming to Gander Bay and Twillingate Regions

Government of Newfoundland and Labrador
Transportation and Works
July 2, 2010

Bridgework Coming to Gander Bay and Twillingate Regions

The Williams Government's infrastructure strategy continues to deliver tangible benefits to motorists travelling throughout Newfoundland and Labrador. The Honourable Tom Hedderson, Minister of Transportation and Works, today announced that a tender will be called for bridgework in the Gander Bay and Twillingate regions.

"The Walter B. Elliot Causeway provides an essential road link to the beautiful Twillingate region,"

"We have approximately 740 bridges throughout the province and we place the highest priority on maintaining these important pieces of highway infrastructure," said Minsiter Hedderson. "Periodic maintenance of our bridge structures helps to ensure the longevity of these structures and enhance public safety."

The tender calls for the replacement of an expansion joint and associated work on the Gander Bay Causeway Bridge and the Walter B. Elliot Causeway Bridge.

"Quality highway infrastructure, including bridge infrastructure, is vital to rural economies that depend heavily on tourist traffic each year," said Harry Harding, MHA for Bonavista North. "The replacement of an expansion joint on the Gander Bay Causeway will help lead to a smoother driving experience for all motorists travelling through this region."

"The Walter B. Elliot Causeway provides an essential road link to the beautiful Twillingate region," said Derrick Dalley, MHA for the Isles of Notre Dame. "This area plays host to many tourists each summer, from both within and outside the province, and I am pleased to see this necessary investment in the causeway bridge."

Budget 2010: The Right Investments - For Our Children and Our Future provides $177.7 million in Provincial Government funding for road and bridge expenditures throughout the province. This funding will be supplemented by an additional $57.9 million in Federal Government funding for a total road and bridge investment of $235.6 million in 2010-11. The Provincial Government's overall infrastructure strategy includes investments in municipalities, healthcare, education, justice, social housing, transportation, and environment and conservation.

Can You Tow An Iceberg?

The first towing of an iceberg occurred in 1971 and is now a common practice in the management of icebergs for the offshore oil industry.

This is not the proper term for the massive icebergs are merely deflected slightly from their paths.

A vessel navigating around a berg circulates a floating line. A junction is made so that the berg has been circled and then tow tension is applied carefully to avoid rolling the berg or pulling the line over the top.

Yes, Icebergs do hit bottom creating trenches in he sea bed.

This occurs mainly along the coast because of irregular tidal currents that force them close to shore.

The troughs in the sea bed can be several kilometres in length.

Does Iceberg Ice Last Longer Than Fresh Ice?

No. When a piece of iceberg ice and a piece of freshwater ice are the same size, shape and temperature, they will melt at around the same rate.

A small experiment in which this was demonstrated actually showed that a block of tap water ice outlasted a similar iceberg ice block by 10 minutes.

this is one of the largest and longest running folk festivals in the province of Newfoundland & Labrador

    Spillar's Cove

It is very dangerous to get close to an iceberg.

You only see the tip of the iceberg above water and it is much larger underneath the waterline.

How close can you get to an iceberg?

A safe distance must be kept at all times because if the iceberg would break or roll while you were near the berg it would dump you into ocean faster than you could imagine.

Also, it is not a good idea to attempt to get on the iceberg because they are unstable. Usually, a minimum distance of the iceberg length should be kept , and even then safety cannot be guaranteed.

Our island's ocean view paths are one of the best ways to view an iceberg's final journey. As a note of care, you should always be alert when walking along along our pathways and never stray from the footpaths while on a clifftop.

The interior temperature of an iceberg ranges between -15 and -20 degrees Celsius

At the surface the temperature can increase to 0 degrees Celsius (the melting point, 32 degrees F).

Icebergs in warm water appear colder than those in cold water because the fast melting speeds up the internal temperature gradient exposing the cold interior.

How Do Icebergs Break Up?

style="width:600px">

    <a href="http://townoftwillingate.ca/go/bm.pix/_mg_0898_ver5.s800x800.jpg"

They melt.

HOW DO ICEBERGS BREAK UP?

Because they melt this causes them to change shape, which in turn causes them to break apart or roll over.

An iceberg is affected mostly by waves crashing up against the iceberg, wearing away at the frozen ice.

The waterline "notch" which forms, induces the break up or submerged blocks of ice.

The melting and break-up rates change with the water and air temperature. For instance, a large berg may take 90 days to fully corrode in water temperatures around 0 degrees whereas the same berg may only last 11 days in 10 degree waters.

How Fast Do Icebergs Move?

An iceberg drifts at about 0.2 m/s or 0.7 k/hr.

The speeds that an iceberg drifts depend on various factors such as, size, shape, currents, waves and wind.

Icebergs have been seen with a speed greater than 1 m/s. Also, there has been stationary no grounded bergs sighted.

Icebergs often take quite eccentric paths so that the distance traveled by a berg may be two or three times longer than if it were to follow in a straight line.

How Hard Is Iceberg Ice?

The strength of an iceberg is 1% that of steel and 10% that of concrete.

These figures may not sound too alarming however, a ship colliding with an iceberg would only end in disaster such as with the S.S. Titanic.

The enormous thrust involved and potentially huge contact area with the ice can generate hundreds of tons of force on the hull which would cause it to dent and crumple.

How Many Icebergs Are There?

Approximately 40,000 icebergs, medium to large size, break from the glaciers annually in Greenland and about 1-2% (400-800) of those make it as far south as 48 degrees north
latitude (St. John's).

These numbers vary from year to year.

Some years there are very few while others there are so many you can't see out the harbour.

    Size really does matter.

Icebergs come in all sizes from massive to tiny.

Small bergs only weight about 1% of the weight of a massive iceberg.

greater than 10 million tons and hundreds of meters long

Categories of iceberg sizes, which are used to record iceberg statistics, range from very large (greater than 10 million tons and hundreds of meters long) to large, medium and small bergs.

There are also bergy bits and growlers (the smallest bergs), which are grand piano size pieces.

How Much Of An Iceberg Is Below Water?

Only the tip of the iceberg can be seen by looking at it from afar.

How much of an iceberg is below water?

If you were to approach the massive berg you would notice that approximately 7/8 of the iceberg lies beneath the ocean surface.

Absolute caution must be taken when approaching an iceberg due to the potential for the iceberg to "flip" as it's weight shifts during the melting process.

This can be dangerous for small water boats such as kayaks and canoes if they get too close!

How Old Are Icebergs?

After breaking from the glaciers, the bergs usually spend a year or so in the Arctic Bays melting slowly (or not at all in the winter) until eventually passing through the Davis Strait and into the Labrador current.

After breaking from the glacier and moving southward and iceberg usually doesn't last longer than a year south of Davis Strait.

These glacial icebergs are more than 15,000 years old!

How Pure Is Iceberg Ice?

Glacier ice is formed from falling snow.

This snow is condensed water vapour from the atmosphere, therefore making the water quite pure. Another reason is that the glaciers are so sold that there are not many pollutants.

Sometimes airborne dust from volcano eruptions or from wind (thousands of years ago) is deposited on the surface of a glacier and gradually becomes trapped within the ice so that traces are found in icebergs.

Fresh enought to drink!

Northeast Church Heritage Museum

Contact: 709-884-2827

The Northeast Church Heritage Museum was built in 1868 and closed it's doors to public service in 1987. It boasts a hand-carved pulpit and communion rail as well as a restored Bevington Pipe Organ.

A group of local citizens acquired the building when it became in danger of demolition. The group has since evolved into the North East Church Heritage Association with the mission of preserving the building as a Church Museum.

The building will be open to visitors during July and August and may be viewed at other times by contacting any member of the Association.

St. Peter's Church Museum

St. Peter's Anglican Church stands as a grand heritage structure in Twillingate as well as one of the oldest wooden churches in Newfoundland. The cornerstone for St. Peter's was laid on November 6, 1839.

The church's bell was purchased by the people of all religious denominations as a thanksgiving for the great seal harvest of 1862. The bell bears the inscription, "In memory of the Great Haul, 1862".

A beautiful stained glass window exists in the church near the front with the inscription of "To the Glory of God and in memory of William Harnett,

Principal of St. Peter's High School, and Lay Reader at St. Peter's Church, 1915 - 1945. Installed in 1976 by ex-pupils and friends".
This dedication of the stained glass window was held on August 1, 1976 in dedication to a well remembered principal of St. Peter's School - William Harnett.

St. Peter's Church has strong connections with St. James Anglican Church in Poole, Dorset - ( A county of south-west England where many of Twillingate's ancestral ties originated.) and was actually built in it's image.

The above photo shows St. Peter's on the left and St. Jame's on the right. It isn't difficult to see the resemblance between the two churches.

To see even more similarities look at the photos below:

  <-- St Peters | St James -->

Poole was the home of many Newfoundland merchants and in particular John Slade.

Slade contributed timbers to the building of St. James Church and acquired from the old church the brass candle sconces.

Those sconces which he gave to St. Peter's still decorate the walls today.

The Great House Haul, 2011

In 2010 the Isles Wooden Boat Building Committee (founded, 2008) acquired an old merchant retail store from its owners, former Twillingate Mayor Danny Bath, and his Wife Wanda (nee Greenham).

The store was used by a number of merchant firms, including the Howletts and Ashbournes, and is thought to be over 100 years old.

The building tow from South to North Island is tentatively scheduled for this coming FRIDAY, 15 JULY. Approximate start time is 9:00 am.

In 2011 the store will be transported from its current location in Durrell (Twillingate) to a parcel of land on Twillingate's North Island near our community partners, the Twillingate Museum & Craft Shop.

The first part of the move was made on 9 June, and the final stage is set for Wednesday, 27 July, 2011 (start time 2:00 pm). It will feature an old-fashioned house haul, and be part of the local Fish, Fun & Folk Festival.

Locals and visitors alike will have a chance to man the ropes for the haul*

This Facebook group is intended to give a background to the building's move in 2011, as well as a history of the structure and the firms which once used it.

In 2010 the Twillingate Town Council declared the old store a Municipal Heritage Structure. The story of the building was featured in the February, 2011 issue of Downhome Magazine, and in two June (2011) issues of the Lewisporte Pilot.

*Only persons aged eighteen (18) and over will be permitted to participate in the haul, and must sign a waiver of liability form. The Committee suggests a donation of $20.00 per participant towards building renovations.

The second stage of the move will involve towing the structure by sea using long liners from South to North Island. This will take place sometime between 1-26 July.
The date cannot be fixed in advance, as the Committee must wait for perfect wind, weather, and tidal conditions on the day. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause."

Come join us for all the fun!!!

What Causes the Streaks and Colors In Icebergs?

a bluish streak in the iceberg because of the freezing and re-freezing of melted ice

The natural light scatters the characteristics of pure ice.

However, airborne dust or dirt eroded from land ends up on the glacial surface which forms a noticeable dark streak in the iceberg.

What Is The Largest Iceberg Recorded?

The largest Northern Hemisphere iceberg on record was encountered near Baffin Island in 1882.

It was 13km long, 6 km wide and a freeboard (height above water) of about 20 meters.

The mass of that iceberg was in excess of nine billion tons - enough water for everyone in the world to drink a litre a day for more than four years.

Despite this staggering statistic, icebergs from Antarctica may be many times larger than this. In 1987, an iceberg with and area of 6350 square kilometres broke from Ros Ice shelf. This berg had a mass of around 1.4 trillion tons and could have supplied 250 tons of pure drinking water for everyone on earth!

Icebergs come in a variety of shapes and sizes.

No two icebergs are the same, however there are categories to place an iceberg in such as, tabular, blocky, wedge, dome, pinnacle, and dry dock are used.

What Should I Watch For When Looking At An Iceberg?

Things to look for when observing an iceberg:

Besides the natural beauty and estimating the size of the berg and its shape there are many features which may be noted.

An iceberg may have coloured streaks, caves and tunnels, old and new waterline notches, even objects such as boulders or birds are seen on icebergs.

In an extremely magnificent occasion you may witness an iceberg breaking up or rolling over.

Where Do Icebergs Come From?

Icebergs mainly in the North Atlantic come from about 100 iceberg producing glaciers along the coast of Greenland.

However, a few originate in the eastern Canadian Artic Islands. Ninety per cent of Newfoundland's icebergs - which originate on the western coast of Greenland - are among the fastest moving glaciers in the world, up to 7km/hr.

The icebergs that are seen around Newfoundland are carried by the Labrador current.

Icebergs travel a long distance before deteriorating.

They originate about latitude 75 degrees north in Baffin Bay. An iceberg may travel 4,000 km south to around latitude 40 degrees north (800 km south of St. John's, NL).

Extremely unusual sightings have been seen in Bermuda.

why are icebergs mostly white?

Icebergs are full of tiny bubbles making them appear white.

The surface reflects white light giving the iceberg an overall white appearance.

There are sections in the iceberg that appears blue in color, this is because there are no bubbles in the ice.
